Credit Card Fraud and Your Business
Business owners who accept credit card payment from their customers are always at risk of credit card fraud and ID theft. The best way to avoid being victimized by identity thieves and scammers is to know the signs and take all the necessary precautions.
Even simple steps such as making sure that the signature on the credit card is exactly the same as the one on the credit card slip and asking for a valid proof of identification (driver’s license, passport, student ID or company ID) must not be overlooked. Here are other important reminders for merchants:
• Make sure that there are no erasures on the signature area of the card.
• Make sure that the credit card bears the official color design or logo or the issuer. For example, MasterCard and Visa each have their own distinct color designs. A fake credit card may appear to be discolored or the hologram may appear to have been tampered.
• Call the credit card company to verify the bearer’s identity. Even if takes a few extra minutes, this step is worth taking especially if you have doubts. When you make the call, make sure that you have the customer’s credit card with you.
• Make sure that all your sales personnel are aware about credit card fraud that they are taking all the necessary steps of security.
