What is a Tissue Stress Model?

Clinical disciplines involved with musculoskeletal medicine have several different frameworks in which to supervise patients. There is the social model, the medical model and the biopsychosocial model. A model which is known as the tissue stress model is becoming popular when it comes to overuse injuries, especially in athletes. This tissue stress model starts by determining which the injured structures are. Next, clinical tests are done to reproduce the symptoms in the injured structure. Then strategies are being developed to decrease the stress in the inured structure. Such strategies under the tissue stress model include the use of exercises, tape or strapping, foot orthotics and/or modifications to the athletic footwear.
