Being a Pig Farmer
Raising pigs has long been a staple industry of the American south and has been part of this great region’s culture and economic livelihood since well before the Civil War. Having spent the vast majority of my life in the hustle and bustle of the north east, first going to law school before ending up working as a business analyst for a Wall Street firm I recently became intrigued by the South’s pig industry and a few months ago, on a pretty spontaneous impulse, I decided to quit my job, sell my house and all my belongings, and move down to Alabama where I purchased a small local pig farm. Even though I really still don’t fully know how to raise and feed pigs, the other farmers in town have been a great resource, as has the local agriculture collection at the town library. I look forward to learning more about raising pigs, because there is no way I’m going back to my old crazy life.
